Boy drowns in S Goa creek, sister jumps in to save him, dies too

Panaji: A family from Curchorem lost two children after their son, 8, drowned in a creek connected to Canaguinim beach on Sunday, and his sister Sanika, 17, who jumped in to save him, died while undergoing treatment on Monday.Cuncolim PI Diogo Gracias said that five members of a family from Curchorem went to Canaguinim beach for a picnic, including two minors, who were accompanied by their mother.Gracias said that the family left Curchorem at around 1pm and the incident took place at around 4pm. Gracias said that the creek is connected to the beach.When the boy went to the creek and his sister saw him drowning, instead of alerting her family members, she jumped into the water to save her brother. Unfortunately, she could not save him and she herself started drowning.When the girl was drowning, locals at the beach saw her and alerted the people around. The girl’s family was alerted after hearing the noise and rushed to the spot. When the girl was taken out of the water, she told her family that her brother had drowned.Locals immediately began searching and traced the boy in the water. Both minors were shifted to the primary health centre, Bali, where doctors declared him dead. As the girl was having breathing issues, she was shifted to South Goa district hospital.Gracias said that as the girl’s health condition was stable, she was shifted to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, for further treatment, but she breathed her last on Monday at the hospital while undergoing treatment.Gracias said that the doctors conducted postmortem examinations and handed over the bodies to their family members for final rites. Cuncolim police have registered a case of unnatural death.
