The real hero: 20-year-old man saves 7 lives after climbing into a burning building in Vietnam

Nguyen Le Tu, a 20-year-old student in Hanoi, has been hailed as a hero after rescuing seven people from a burning building in a dramatic late-night incident. A student at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Tu was returning home from the gym on March 24, 2026, when he noticed flames and thick smoke rising from a six-storey residential building in the Linh Nam area. What followed was a series of split-second decisions that saved multiple lives, as he entered the burning structure without protective gear, relying on instinct, courage and presence of mind.

The real hero’s daring entry into a burning building

The fire reportedly broke out in the evening, quickly spreading smoke through multiple floors. Visibility dropped rapidly, leaving several residents trapped inside with no clear way out.Smoke posed the greatest danger, as it can disorient occupants and restrict breathing within minutes. With no immediate access to safe exits, those inside were at serious risk.Recognising the danger of entering through the main access points, Tu climbed onto the roof to find an alternative entry. After locating an opening, he forced his way in and navigated the smoke-filled interior. To cope with the conditions, he used a water-soaked shirt as a makeshift breathing filter, allowing him to remain inside longer. He then made repeated trips, guiding residents to safety, including elderly individuals, women and children.Moving through thick smoke with limited visibility, he relied on quick judgement to locate people and lead them out. Each trip increased the danger, as prolonged exposure to smoke and heat can quickly become fatal.

The physical toll of the rescue

By the time emergency services brought the situation under control, Tu had already rescued seven people. The effort, however, came at a cost.He suffered smoke inhalation and was hospitalised. Such exposure can cause serious respiratory issues due to toxic gases and reduced oxygen levels. His condition later stabilised after treatment.

A humble response that surprised many

What makes the story even more striking is Tu’s reaction afterwards. Rather than sharing what he had done, he chose to downplay it.When speaking to his mother, he said he had “tripped” and needed medical attention, avoiding any mention of the rescue. It was only after he appeared in national news coverage the next day that his family and the wider public learned the truth.Following media coverage, Tu was widely praised across Vietnam. His actions were recognised by authorities and youth organisations, and he was awarded honours such as the “Brave Youth” badge. On social media, many described him as a symbol of courage and selflessness, with his humility drawing as much attention as the rescue itself.
