Surat: A planned weekend outing that fell through ended in a heartbreaking tragedy when a 24-year-old nursing student died by suicide in the city. The victim was interning at a private hospital in Parvat Patiya, and ostensibly became severely distressed after her childhood friend could not arrange for their trip to Dumas beach as his salary had been delayed.The victim, Manjula Rathwa, a native of Chhota Udepur and a student at a nursing college in Bharuch, had been interning at the Surat facility for the past two months and resided on the hospital premises. The tragedy came to light early on Monday when her roommate woke up and found Rathwa hanging from the ceiling fan.Despite being rushed to Surat Civil Hospital, doctors declared her brought dead.According to the police, her childhood friend, who works in Ankleshwar, had travelled to Surat to meet her on Sunday. When he explained he could not afford the beach trip because his salary was delayed, Rathwa became severely distressed. Call logs show the duo spoke late into the night.Police have registered a case of accidental death, sent the victim’s phone for forensic analysis, and are currently recording the friend’s statement to piece together the final hours leading up to the tragedy.
