Hyderabad: Illegal betting platforms, once hidden in secret groups, have transformed into slick digital marketing machines. They now openly target youngsters across social media, using AI-generated videos, fake jackpot stories, and sponsored ads that promise instant wealth. Despite repeated police crackdowns, these networks continue to thrive, exploiting technology to stay ahead of enforcement.A growing number of betting apps are pushing short-form reels on Instagram and Facebook. Many feature flashy claims of winning thousands within minutes, showcasing luxury lifestyles, gadgets, and cash rewards. The content is designed to look like influencer posts, making it harder for viewers—especially young people—to tell real success from fabricated hype.Unlike old school gambling rings that relied on referrals and secrecy, today’s operators use advanced digital tools to scale fast. Artificial intelligence allows them to churn out convincing promotional content at low cost, flooding feeds with viral-style videos and targeted ads. Investigators say this marks a major shift: Betting platforms are no longer recruiting quietly but aggressively chasing new users through algorithm-driven promotion. For law enforcement, the challenge is mounting. Cybercrime units continue to track and act against syndicates, but the rapid spread of AI-generated content, the ease of creating multiple accounts, and the misuse of respected brands keep these platforms highly visible.SG Shiva Shankar, ACP (cybercrimes), Malkajgiri, told TOI that police have not yet specifically identified AI-generated advertisements linked to betting platforms. However, the officer said social media continues to be a major channel through which betting operators reach users and promote their services.“We have noticed betting-related promotions appearing across various social media channels. Operators continuously adopt new methods to attract users and evade detection, making enforcement more challenging,” the ACP said.Telangana police and Enforcement Directorate have launched a massive crackdown a year ago on Tollywood actors and social media influencers for promoting illegal betting, gambling, and casino apps (like Fairplay, Yolo247, A23, Junglee Rummy). The investigations were taken up following complaints by citizens suffering major financial losses, with one individual reporting a loss of Rs 3 crore after viewing YouTube advertisements featuring these personalities. As digital marketing grows more sophisticated, authorities face betting networks that are sharper, faster, and more aggressive than ever before.
