Colvale jail inmate suffers nasal fractures in assault

Mapusa: An inmate at the Central Jail in Colvale sustained severe fractures after he was allegedly assaulted by a fellow prisoner on Tuesday evening, marking the second violent clash inside the jail in the past few days.The first incident was reported around 3.30pm in Block No. 4 following an altercation between two undertrial prisoners. Police identified the accused as Narayan alias Babu Bhalekar, who allegedly assaulted fellow inmate Rakesh Patil with repeated fist blows and kicks to the face, causing swelling and heavy bleeding.Jail authorities rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Patil was administered first aid before being shifted to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa and later referred to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. Doctors found that he had sustained fractures to both nasal bones.Based on a complaint filed by deputy superintendent of Central Jail N B Pavane, Colvale police registered an offence against Bhalekar under Section 117(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.Police are investigating both incidents.
