Laura Rutledge drew attention this week after sharing photos from her trip to Cannes, where the ESPN host spent time with NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The meeting brought together two of the biggest names in sports media and basketball through a growing business partnership that extends well beyond the playing field.Rutledge’s appearance alongside Johnson highlighted the expanding influence both figures have outside their traditional roles. Laura Rutledge documented the France trip on Instagram, sharing a series of photos from Cannes alongside the caption, “Cannes, what a dream!!“So thankful to Disney Advertising for having me!”The connection came through Publicis Connected Media, which announced a formal partnership with Magic Johnson Enterprises in February. Under the agreement, Johnson serves as an advisor while providing access to his network of culturally relevant business and media platforms.Johnson also reflected on the gathering through his own Instagram account after spending time with Rutledge and other executives during the festival.“I had some great meetings today in Cannes with some impressive brands thanks to my partners at Publicis! “I was joined by ESPN reporter Laura Rutledge and 3Arts Sports Co-Founder and CEO Aaron Eanes this afternoon, and we really enjoyed our time and conversations.“Thank you to Publicis Sports CEO Suzy Deering for an awesome day and Publicis Groupe CEO Arthur Sadoun!”The annual Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has become one of the world’s premier gatherings for leaders in advertising, marketing and media. Johnson’s presence reflects how his influence has continued to expand since retiring from basketball. The five-time NBA champion now holds ownership interests in the Los Angeles Dodgers, LAFC, the Washington Commanders, the Los Angeles Sparks, the Washington Spirit and esports organization Team Liquid.Rutledge is also entering a significant new chapter professionally. Although she concluded a decade-long run as host of SEC Nation in May, she remains ESPN’s Monday Night Football sideline reporter and host of NFL Live. She is also expected to become part of ESPN’s first Super Bowl broadcast team when the network airs Super Bowl LXI in February 2027.
