Ludhiana: A state-record downpour has broken a fierce summer heatwave, sending temperatures plummeting nearly 13 degrees below seasonal averages and providing the region with desperate relief. The district emerged as the wettest location in Punjab after receiving 32.6 mm of rain, says the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The steady, hours-long deluge drastically improved local air quality, suppressed heavy dust levels, and drew crowds back into public parks and markets after weeks of oppressive heat. The IMD recorded a maximum temperature of just 26.4°C — a stark 12.9 degrees below the seasonal norm — while the minimum temperature hovered at 24.2°C. However, meteorologists warn the respite will be short-lived. A gradual warming trend is already underway, with the mercury expected to hit 35°C on Sunday before climbing to a scorching 40°C by June 5.By Friday evening, skies had largely cleared to allow sunshine back into the city. While humidity levels spiked significantly following the rain, prevailing cool winds ensured conditions remained comfortable into the night.
