Safety gear given to UGD workers

Madurai: Corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar distributed safety gear to underground drainage workers under NAMASTE scheme on Tuesday at Madurai corporation’s main office. He gave away PPE kits, and spoke about creating safe working practices. City health officer Dr Aravind Jyothi, chief engineer Ramasamy and other officials were present.NAMASTE (National Action Plan for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) is implemented by the Union govt through the ministry of social justice and empowerment and ministry of housing and urban affairs. The scheme is intended to improve safety, dignity, and livelihood of sanitation workers engaged in cleaning sewers and septic tanks. In recognition of their service, July 14 is observed every year as “NAMASTE Day.”
