People are having fewer babies because that’s what many women and men want
Some very rich people, religious leaders, and governments are worried because birth rates are falling. They want more babies to be born. They say bigger families are important to grow communities, religions, and the workforce. Some even support having children through IVF or surrogacy.
But most people aren’t listening.
Governments asked people why they weren’t having more children. Many said raising kids is expensive. Childcare, housing, education, and healthcare all cost a lot. So governments tried to help. Countries offered money for new parents, paid parental leave, childcare support, and even help with fertility treatments like IVF.
Yet birth rates stayed low.
Why? Experts who study populations found that money alone doesn’t change people’s minds about having children. In countries like Sweden, some couples worry about climate change and what the future will be like for their kids. Others simply want different things from life.
Some countries solve worker shortages through immigration, bringing in younger people from other parts of the world. But many governments are uncomfortable with large-scale migration and see it as a security issue.
There are also famous people who have tried to increase the population in their own way. For example, billionaire Elon Musk has had many children and has often spoken about the dangers of low birth rates.
Interestingly, birth rates tend to be a little higher in places where men share childcare more equally. Research shows that when fathers take care of babies and young children, they learn something mothers have known for a long time: raising children takes a lot of time, money, and energy.
Today, many people find meaning in life through careers, hobbies, friendships, travel, or helping others. For them, having children is just one possible choice—not something everyone wants to do.
In the end, many women and men have decided that having more babies is not part of their plan. And no amount of speeches or government programs seems able to change that.
