CHANDIGARH: A group of masked men allegedly tried to break into the ancestral house of Haryana Congress president Rao Narender Singh in Narnaul, but fled after house staff members woke up on hearing suspicious noises and alerted police, officials said on Sunday. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in Shiv Colony area of Narnaul. Family members of Singh’s brother, Rao Devender, were present inside the house at the time, accoridng to news agency PTI. According to police, four to five masked men scaled the boundary wall and entered the premises from the rear side. The accused allegedly cut CCTV camera wires and locked the rooms of house staff members from outside. The intruders then attempted to break open the rear entrance using sharp tools. However, the noise woke up some staff members, who raised an alarm, prompting the accused to flee by jumping over the boundary wall. Police said teams reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident. Narnaul Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bharat Bhushan said special teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused. An FIR has been registered under Section 330 (house-trespass and house-breaking) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), he said. During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from nearby areas, which showed four masked men moving on foot. Preliminary findings suggest the accused could be linked to a gang active in the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh region, the DSP said. “It appears that they entered Rao Narender Singh’s house at random for theft and the house may not have been their specific target,” Bhushan said. “We hope to make early arrests in the case,” he added. The Congress targeted the BJP government over the incident, alleging deterioration in the law and order situation in Haryana. Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged that the accused cut CCTV wires, broke locks and attempted a “deadly assault” on Singh’s family. He demanded the immediate arrest of those involved. He said if such an incident could occur at the residence of the state Congress chief, it reflected the level of fear among ordinary citizens as well. Surjewala further alleged that organised crime, extortion, ransom demands, murder and robbery had become frequent in Haryana.
